What Is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill, also called a medication abortion, is a combination of two drugs used in early pregnancy to end the life growing inside your body.

  • Mifepristone blocks progesterone; a hormone required to maintain the pregnancy. Without progesterone, the developing embryo can no longer survive.

  •  Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo from the body.

This process results in the termination of a developing human life and typically occurs at home.

What Should I Know Before Taking the Abortion Pill?

Before considering abortion pills, it is important to confirm:

  • That you are pregnant via ultrasound

  • How far along you are in pregnancy

  • That the developing baby is located in the uterus (and not ectopic)

It’s important to know how far along you are because the abortion pill is only FDA-approved for pregnancies up to 10 weeks (70 days) from your last menstrual period.

Taking abortion drugs without beyond 10 weeks can increase the risk of serious complications—including incomplete abortion or undetected ectopic pregnancy which can, though rare, lead to death.

Abortion Pill Risks and Side Effects

Most women experience some side effects after taking the abortion pill, such as:

  • Heavy bleeding

  • Severe cramping

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Fever or chills

  • Passing tissue or blood clots

Serious side effects include:

  • Extremely heavy and prolonged vaginal bleeding

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Infection

  • Fever

  • Incomplete abortion (tissue remaining in the uterus), requiring surgical intervention

  • Severe infection (caused by an incomplete abortion)

It is important to know that taking abortion pills results in the destruction of the growing baby inside your body.

Do I Need to See a Medical Provider First?

Yes. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking abortion pills.

The FDA cautions against obtaining abortion pills online without proper medical oversight. Some online providers operate outside the United States and may not follow FDA safety standards. Without pregnancy confirmation, accurate dating, and follow-up care, serious health risks may be increased.

Medical oversight by a healthcare professional helps to ensure:

  • Accurate pregnancy dating

  • Confirmation that the pregnancy is not ectopic

  • Access to proper healthcare if complications arise

Can the Abortion Pill Be Mailed?

Some websites state that they can mail abortion pills to your address. While this may seem convenient, it carries several potential risks.

It is important to consider the following:

  • Taking abortion drugs without knowing how far along you are can increase the risk of serious complications.

  • You need professional medical oversight, especially if serious complications arise.

  • Taking abortion pills results in the destruction of the growing baby inside your body.

Can I Change My Mind After Taking the Abortion Pill?

Yes. Abortion pill reversal aims to counteract the effects of mifepristone, the first dose in the abortion pill regimen. The reversal protocol is for those who have ONLY taken the first drug (mifepristone).

Abortion pill reversal treatment involves prescribing natural progesterone supplements to restore hormone levels, potentially allowing the pregnancy to continue. Natural progesterone competes with mifepristone for receptor sites. This helps the embryo stay attached to the uterus and continue to grow.

After you start the treatment, your healthcare professional will schedule an ultrasound to see if the pregnancy is progressing. You will continue to take the progesterone until you start prenatal care.

If you are unsure about the abortion pill or having second thoughts, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
